Monetary Shocks

Pending a detailed discussion of this topic, here is a graph of the Fed Funds rate.

The cause of these fluctuations is sometimes thought to be changes in the money supply.  This connection is not particularly apparent in the following graph of the nominal money supply, especially in the turbulent 1970s.
